Earlier Gourds I Painted From 2001

These are the very first gourds that I painted (at least that were not just gourd heads for dolls). I have all my gourds numbered. Number one is the little blue pixie...my very first gourd. Number 2 is the dark skinned pixie. Then we jump to 9 and 11 which are the mermaid and pink fairy. These were painted June and July of 2001. During that short period of time I was on a roll and painted 36 gourd figures. As of today I am up to gourd number 118 but that doesn't count all the ornaments, bees, bugs, exchanges, nativity sets and others that didn't get numbered before leaving me. A correct count is over 300.

Wedding Cake Topper, gourds!

I did these to set on the bride and groom table but my daughter liked them so much she wanted them on the cake. I'm not a portrait artist so I did the best I could with caricatures. Everyone says I've caught the groom perfectly..he's always got a smile on his face.

The family below are friends of my daughter. I painted the look alike gourds at her request as a wedding gift to them.

Lucia Zenteno, The Woman Who Outshone the Sun

The Mexican folktale of the same name inspired this piece. Lucia Zenteno was very beautiful with long shining hair. She was always surrounded by butterflies and flowers as well as her friend the iguana. The river would rise from the banks and flow into her long hair. She would comb the river, along with the fish that lived in it, back into it's bed. Lucia was mysterious and different and the people of the village didn't know how to react to her unusual ways. Because she was different the people were frightened and they drove her out of the village. She left and the river flowed into hair and left the village with her. Without the river the people suffered. After a time the people found Lucia and begged forgiveness. Lucia brought back the river but she disappeared leaving them with a lesson learned.
